St Hilda’s College is one of the riverside colleges of Oxford University and was founded in 1893. The College only accepted female undergraduate students until 2008. It is situated next to Magdalen bridge, famous for punting, and is a short walk away from the centre of Oxford.
History
St. Hilda’s College is one of more than 30 colleges at the University of Oxford. The college was founded in 1893 by Dorothea Beale, a Principal of Cheltenham Ladies College. In 1896, St. Hilda’s was recognized as a hall for women only, and remained an all-women’s college until 2008.
St. Hilda’s became an incorporated company with its own council where in 1910 the University acknowledged female students and therefore finally permitted them to become undergraduates for Oxford degrees.
In 1959 the women’s society made an application to the University to be admitted as a full College of the University. The application was accepted making St. Hilda’s the only women’s College in Oxford University between 1994 and 2008. The charter and status was then changed in 2006 to accept men into the College.
Location
The medieval city of Oxford revolves around the prestigious University of Oxford. Nicknamed the ‘City of Dreaming Spires’ by the poet Matthew Arnold, Oxford is known for its beautiful buildings just 60 miles north-west of London. The city is one of the fastest growing and most ethnically diverse in the UK, with a broad economic base with industries such as motor manufacturing, education and science-based businesses.
St. Hilda’s College is based on the river side of the River Cherwell next to Magdalene Bridge, famous for its traditional punting activity. With only a short walk to the main high street, the college provides a perfect location for students to explore this famous city. Since the arrival of the Saxons, the buildings demonstrate English architectural periods including the mid-18th century Radcliffe Camera.
